‘You don’t have to see to wrestle’: Legally blind Alabama HS senior chases state title
James Dowd admits he doubted Jay Spencer.
Dowd served as a wrestling coach at Mae Jemison in Huntsville two years ago when his team competed against St. John Paul II and Spencer, who is legally blind.
"I always thought it was a hard thing for him to do," Dowd said. "I didn't understand it. I was kind of a naysayer to a fact, (thinking) 'Hey, this guy can't be any good. He can't see.'
