James Dowd admits he doubted Jay Spencer. Dowd served as a wrestling coach at Mae Jemison in Huntsville two years ago when his team competed against St. John Paul II and Spencer, who is legally blind. "I always thought it was a hard thing for him to do," Dowd said. "I didn't understand it. I was kind of a naysayer to a fact, (thinking) 'Hey, this guy can't be any good. He can't see.'

‘Just don’t give up’: Bob Jones’ Zaevian Toney overcame near-fatal wreck, father’s shooting death

Zaevian Toney awoke to horrible pain coursing throughout his body. The Bob Jones sophomore wrestler was being crushed by a 2008 Chevy Tahoe. Seconds earlier, Toney’s twin brother, Zaderian, had attempted to make sudden swerve into a turning lane on County Line Road in Madison. The Tahoe flipped and Zaevian, who was not wearing his seat belt, blacked out momentarily.
